Women in science

who says science is a mans field?  Ladies rule

Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin
"The woman who discovered the Universe"
Picture

May 10, 1900 -
December 7, 1979

Cecilia won a scholarship to Cambridge University where she completed her studies but did not earn a degree because she was a woman. Cecilia left Britain to study astronomy at Harvard.

Cecilia's Ph.D thesis, "Stellar Atmospheres, A Contribution to the Observational Study of High Temperature in the Reversing Layers of Stars"  where she related the spectral classes of stars into actual temperatures.  Also, Cecilia observed that the sun must have a million more times hydrogen and much more helium than once believed.

Many experts tried to prove her findings wrong.  It was not until 4 years later that her findings were proven to be true, though today mostly unrecognised.
